If the exercise is done correctly, I typically see a shift of at least two points towards the external environment. In contrast to mindfulness and meditation, which typically result in an increased internal focus, attention training increases external focus. It does not take long for attention training to have lasting effects, even for clients with symptoms of depression.
In order to achieve the best and quickest effect, I recommend that clients carry out the training twice a day. It does not have to be at the same time each day, but many people find it easier to keep to a fixed schedule. In addition, I emphasise that they should be patient with themselves and accept that sometimes they will succeed in this better than others.
